Setting Awesome Goals

We all know what we want to achieve. We also know when and why we want to achieve that goal. Somehow most of us tend to be sidelined when the big question pops up….

How do I achieve my goals?

Today, as we explore the S.M.A.R.T Goal framework (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound), you are in luck. This process will help one self-identify and achieve goals methodically and with accountability.

Specific

Be specific about your goal. Do not make this a detailed list; that’s for later. Keep in mind the following:

Who is important in your life that may help to achieve your goal?
What are you trying to accomplish? Remember to be specific.
When will you accomplish your goal…. ok so this one, for now, will be a rough guideline. Your timeline will become more apparent as you work within the time-bound section.
‘Where’ may be a challenge as it is not always applicable, but if your goal involves a location, this is the spot to include it.
Why am I doing this? This is where you want to give your reason(s) about why your goal is important to you.
The ‘Which’ section is also where you want to determine if your goal will face obstacles or identify requirements. You may have to tweak your goal specifics to include anything you missed earlier.

Measurable

How will you measure your goal? What metrics will help you? Holding yourself accountable is magnified if you have something in front of you to see your progress.
Consider using milestones if it is a long-term goal. Celebrate each accomplishment along the way.

Attainable

Do not be discouraged if you discover that to achieve your goal; there may be more obstacles or new skills needed to hit your target. This is your inspiration and motivation, as now you have a clearer idea of what you will need to do to reach your goal! How will I move around the obstacles? How will I acquire the necessary skills to help?

Realistic

‘Keep it real here. Time, money, resources, and skill level must be assessed. If any fall short, you will need to improve one or more or set a different set of supporting goals in the interim or reset to new goals.

Time-bound

Be realistic with your timing to achieve your goal successfully. Ask yourself (and/or others) when you can meet the target timeline for each of your deliverables. If your goals are in weeks or months, give yourself a ‘check-point’ date to assess your progress one-third or halfway in, depending on the length. Stick to these dates, as setting them will help give you that push to work harder toward them!
